Accomplishments

Now at the end of its funding, the project's research and development has significantly paid off. The IPARS framework (Integrated Parallel Accurate Reservoir Simulator), along with some of the reservoir models, has been released to affiliates. The project was originally initiated under the auspices of the ACTI Program and funded by the Office of Science. This project also has been highly leveraged by related work at both Argonne and The University of Texas at Austin throughout the its duration.

Abstract: The simulation of petroleum reservoirs is an important component in the development of more efficient techniques in oil recovery. Current simulators used routinely in industry are fundamentally limited in the size and complexity of the problems that they can handle. Only through the use of parallel computing will the industry be able to tackle problems of current interest. This project provides the underlying R&D (the physics, mathematics, and computer science) required for the next generation of simulator codes.
