Cometabolism of TCE. This figure shows the results of an engineered in-situ biodegradation system to remediate a TCE spill. Groundwater is flowing from left to right in an aerobic aquifer. Five wells have been installed downgradient of the plume to contain the TCE through aerobic cometaboic biodegradation using methane as the primary substrate. Water containing methane and water is injected into the wells to stimulate TCE cometabolism. In this case, biodegradation has little effect on the plume because TCE concentrations are very high.
