Examples of Bioremediation Modeling Using New Features of UTCHEM

Benzene and toluene biodegradation. In this simulation, benzene and toluene present in a gasoline spill are allowed to biodegrade naturally in an aerobic aquifer. The figures on the left show 3-D representations of aqueous phase benzene, toluene and tracer concentrations. The effect of biodegradtion can be seen by comparing the benzene tracer concentrations to the benzene concentrations. These effects are shown more dramatically in the pictures on the right, in which concentrations of these substances in the upper layer of the aquifer are depicteded in two dimensions. Biodegradation has a significant effect on the location of the MCL concentration of 0.005 mg/L.
